Idiom Story - Throwing Bricks to Attract Jade
There were two poets in the Tang Dynasty, one named Chang Jian and the other Zhao Gu (gǔ). Zhao Gu was skilled at writing poems, and Chang Jian admired him from the bottom of his heart, always hoping to obtain Zhao Gu's poetic lines.
Once, when Zhao Gu arrived in Suzhou, Chang Jian learned that Zhao Gu planned to visit Lingyan Temple. So Chang Jian got there first and deliberately wrote a poem on a conspicuous wall, but only composed the first two lines.
Shortly afterwards, Zhao Gu came to Lingyan Temple. When he saw the incomplete poem on the wall, he felt a great pity. So he borrowed a writing brush and inkstone and added the last two lines.
Since Zhao Gu's continued lines were better than Chang Jian's original ones, people referred to Chang Jian's approach as "throwing bricks to attract jade". This idiom is often used to convey modesty, meaning that one offers superficial opinions or articles in the hope of eliciting better insights or works from others.
